St John's Archcathedral (Warsaw, Poland)

Archcathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Warsaw

Archcathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Warsaw was originally a Gothic church. The cathedral was reconstructed after its destruction in 1944. It is one of the most important churches connected with history of the Church and the Polish State. Services, connected with the election of Polish kings, were held here. Famous sermons of Father Piotr Skarga were also preached in the cathedral. When the Constitution of 3 May 1791 was enacted, its proclamation was celebrated here as well. This Roman Catholic church, within the Old Town precinct in Warsaw, is one of Poland’s national pantheons. Among others, President Gabriel Narutowicz and Henryk Sienkiewicz are buried in the crypts of the archcathedral. Along with the old city, the church has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
